A classic issue and quite possibly the most popular ‘coin’ in the American colonial series.

We receive an average of about five calls per month from people who either want to verify the authenticity of a Bar Cent, or sell us one. So far, every one of those has turned out to be a copy or modern reproduction.

All authentic Bar coppers can be identified by the small spur protruding from the left side of the 2nd bar from the bottom on the reverse, as seen in our photo.

This is a wholesome example with pleasing rich brown color. There are just a few light marks here and there and a minor rim bump at 7 o’clock on the obverse.

It is not easy to find an original Bar these days; many have been cleaned through the years, and now exhibit odd, unnatural color. This one is attractive, and we don’t expect to have it for very long.

The last PCGS AU58 Bar Cent offered at public auction was at Superior in September, 2006, where an example realized $25,300. A PCGS AU55 example realized $18,400 in the August 2006 Heritage ANA Auction in Denver.
