Ryder-31, W-2260 variety, a distinctive Redbook type and always popular as such.  Considered to be Rarity-5-, but much less common than that with the sharp reverse seen on this piece.

Indeed, most of this type were struck from a badly degraded reverse die and show very little detail.

And while this piece has some light surface roughness and a few marks, it is considerably more appealing than most of the Ryder-31’s we’ve seen, and not too far from the very best examples that have come to market in the last decade, including this specimen sold at Goldberg’s in 2001 which brought $7,475 10 years ago and this piece sold at Stack’s last November for $5,750.  Notably, both of those examples now reside in the collections of advanced specialists.

In all, this is a nice, sharp piece with pleasing light golden brown color and much to recommend it, with anything materially finer sure to be considerably more expensive.
