BD-6 variety, Small 8 type. Considered to be Rarity-6.
Per acclaimed numismatist David Akers, this Small 8 variety of 1798 is “substantially more rare than the Large 8” and “should be valued higher in all grades“.
And they are seldom seen in the truly original condition of this incredible example. Lustrous, with superb surfaces, lovely golden orange color and, in this author’s view, looking extreeeeemely undergraded in this old PCGS slab.
And CAC agreed, making this the only Gold stickered example of the Small 8 type in their census.
(Editor’s note: PCGS did not designate the Small 8 and Large 8 variants on this date until 20+ years after this coin was graded, so while the coin #8078 on this slab was correct at the time it was certified, that # is now used for the Large 8 variant. This Small 8 is now coin #8079 as shown below).
Note that this coin has been verified by CAC with a Gold sticker indicating that it exceeds their standards for this grade level.
