Ryder 13 variety, considered to be Rarity-1.

A very wholesome Choice AU example with lovely chocolate brown color and nice, smooth surfaces.

There is just a trace of friction on the highest points of the design and the typical loss of reverse detail seen on mid and late die states of this type.

When sold in the Pine Tree EAC auction in 1975, cataloger Walter Breen described this very coin as "Possibly Finest Known". While that may have been slightly optimistic, there is no question that this piece ranks high in the condition census and would represent an improvement over most examples residing in advanced collections today.

Breen also noted in his 1975 catalog description that "this coin was rumored to have been one of the 8 high grade Vermont coppers in the famed Stepney Hoard dispersed in the early 1950’s". Alas, that cannot be proven.

Ex-Pine Tree Auctions EAC Convention Sale, February 15, 1975 lot #433.
