Maris 74-bb, W-5515, Running Fox, Ghost Coulter type.  Considered to be Rarity-5+.

Another piece which is admittedly not your typically eye appealing CRO Early Bird fare, but we’re going to make another exception for this rare variety missing from a number of advanced NJ collections.

This specimen can be traced to the 1995 sale of the John M. Griffee Collection, where it was sold raw, graded VG/Fine, and described as follows:

"Fairly even, deep olive brown with some grey-brown overtones.  Obverse deeply flawed and laminated at the top, mostly obscuring the horse’s head; reverse more lightly flawed below the shield, smaller one within the left vertical lines.  Both centers soft and indistinct, due to the die state.  "Running fox" just visible.  Overse die broken from rim at 5:15 up and into barrel, center of the die failing; reverse die cud above UNU present, but here only faintly visible.  This was Mr. Griffee’s C.C. No. 18 of the 30 he believed survived."

In all, a representative and notably pedigreed example of a very tough issue.

Ex McCawley-Grellman’s October 1995 sale of the John Griffee Collection, as noted, held in conjunction with the First Annual Convention of the Colonial Coin Collectors Club, lot #114.
