Noe-16, Salmon 1-A, W-360 variety, IN on Reverse type. Considered to be Rarity-5.
A tough variety, and one that is always seen with weakness in the central obverse. Indeed, even the Ford coin, described in the 2005 Stack’s catalog as “an exceptional specimen” and almost certainly the finest known Noe-16, displays this same strike characteristic (image courtesy of Stack’s-Bowers):
That piece realized $40,250 in 2005.
And while the current example is not as august as Ford’s, it is a condition census level survivor with decidedly original surfaces, luster lingering in the devices and nice golden and gray color. Less expensive, too.
Ex Stack’s-Bowers January 2013 sale of the Ted L. Craige Collection, lot #11006 where it realized $14,100; earlier Lester Merkin.
$12,750
