A classic issue which is actually a copy of the Good Samaritan Shilling known to exist since 1730, purchased by the British Museum in 1848, and long thought to be a pattern Pine Tree Shilling.

But that would later (much later) be debunked by Eric Newman who determined that that piece was actually a fabulous fake made from a genuine Pine Tree Shilling on which the obverse had been ground off and replaced with the seal of the British Commission of Sick and Wounded, a 17th century precursor of the Red Cross. Who knew? Eric did.

In the interim, however, dealer Thomas Wyatt created these fantasy restrikes circa 1850 which have been collected ever since.

And this is a lovely example of the type, with lustrous, old toned silver surfaces and excellent eye appeal.
