Miller 4-L, W-2810, Mailed Bust Left, Horned Bust type. Considered to be Rarity-1, though much tougher in this infrequently seen ‘Pre-Horn’ early die state before the horn-shaped die break starts to form.
And this is a lovely, chocolate brown Choice AU example of this tough issue, and is the best one I’ve personally seen in decades of searching.
My former partner Dave Wnuck and I first acquired this very coin at auction for collector Jim LaSarre in 2000, and then brokered the sale of it (as part of Jim LaSarre’s intact Connecticut collection) to mega-collector Syd Martin in 2006. Where it resided for the next 17 years before appearing in Stack’s recent sale of Syd’s 1787 Connecticuts where this coin was described as follows:
“. . . much nicer than the Collection SLT or Neil Rothschild coins. This [die] state was conspicuously absent from the Ford, Newman, Twin Leaf, Martin and Partrick Collections.”
And so we are delighted to offer it here so that the next owner does not have to wait decades for the next one.
