Newman 8-C, W-1175 variety, the so-called “Sidewise 4” type Redbook type. Considered to be Rarity-7.
A rare and distinctive issue in this series with the 4 in the denomination inexplicably (and charmingly) engraved on its side to the delight of coin collectors 300+ years later.
Editor’s Note: Eric Newman designated this variety as the “Sidewise 4” which seems odd to me. Apparently NGC too, since they have opted for the more conventional “Sideways 4” on the slab label. Personally, I’d have gone with dealer John Kraljevich’s suggested “Lazy 4”.
By any name this is a neat issue. And since most American Plantation Tokens seen in the marketplace are actually restrikes made in the early 1800s, it is important to note that this variety exists only as a circa 1688 original striking. Wow, that’s old.
And this super crusty all original XF is about the nicest example we’ve ever seen of this rare issue struck in this temperamental tin composition, with the all important 4 bold and clear.
