Breen-986, W-5755 variety, ‘Seated Left’ type.

A pleasing and totally original chocolate brown example with good luster and an incredibly sharp strike, and certainly one of the finest known examples of not just this issue, but of any Nova Eborac coin of any variety.

This specimen can be traced to the collection of Dr. Angus Black, whose collection was sold by New Netherlands Rare Coin Co. in their famous December 1968 "60th Auction", where it was described as ‘Easily one of the finest extant’.  It has remained in private hands ever since.

In recent years, the only piece which could be considered even close in quality was the finest example in the Stack’s May 2004 Ford sale, lot #298.  That piece was called "Choice Uncirculated" when offered raw, and it was technically high grade, but the reverse strike was not complete, and there was in our view evidence of an old cleaning which had left some pink reside in the devices.  Still, that piece brought $24,140 when sold 7 years ago (in an auction in which most of the coins have subsequently re-traded for much more money).

Overall, we prefer this piece, as it is more original, better struck, while also possessing a famous provenance to one of the most signficant colonial auction sales ever held.
