V.17-87A, considered to be just Rarity-2 as a variety, but far less common in this incredible state of preservation.
The surfaces are hard, glossy and essentially flawless, the color is a lovely chocolate brown and the strike is unusually good for a Machin’s product to the extent that some detail is present on this coin that we did not realize existed on this issue.
Our research indicates a very high grade survivor of this variety offered in Herbert Melnick’s November, 1983 ‘Grand Central Auction’, lot #77, but we have no record of any other similarly high grade example trading publicly.
A fantastic specimen.
