Breen-991, W-5800 variety, this is the actual coin plated in the Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins.  Considered to be low Rarity-7.

And this is one of the finest known examples of one of the most sought after issues in the American colonial series – and one of the coolest coins we’ve ever offered.

Our own census data reveals just 11 known of this type, of which most are locked up in long term collections or museum holdings.

Choice golden brown in color with lovely surfaces, intricate die lines in the fields and just a couple of marks consistent with the grade and as one would expect to find on an original 222 year-old copper coin.

In the last two decades, just 2 of these have been offered at public auction:  A dark, rough, raw piece called ‘XF’ at Stack’s in 2002, and this coin.

Anything materially finer than this one (assuming such a coin was actually for sale) might cost about twice this price.

Ex Stack’s May 2004 sale of the Ford Collection, Part II, lot #313; earlier F.C.C Boyd.

$275,000
