Struck in Brass with an Engrailed Edge.
A product of the same dies as the silver example on this list, but here offered in a brass composition we have not seen before. And we’re not the only ones, as this issue is not listed in brass in the Baker, Breen, Fuld, Rulau or Musante references.
Interestingly, PCGS gives this brass composition a specific coin #988, and shows a second example graded in AU55, but that piece is not a the same type as this, it is actually a 1783 Washington Draped Bust, Original in brass which last traded at Heritage in 2008.
Leading us to conclude that the present coin actually is unique in this composition. How cool is that?
It also happens to be an absolute knockout, with superb, deeply reflective surfaces and ethereal toning in shades of silvery blue, chartreuse and gold.
