KM-478.1 variety, Louis XV type.  Struck at the Paris mint.

Just the second example of this denomination we’ve ever offered on this site.

This is a half dollar-sized coin of the same type as was recovered from the wreck of the Le Chameau, a French supply ship destined for North America which sank off the coast of Nova Scotia in 1725, taking with it a veritable time capsule of French gold and silver coins which circulated in early America.

And while the silver pieces salvaged from that wreck were in decrepit condition (and that’s being kind), this is a lovely, original, old toned Ch. AU example which would fit nicely into a well chosen collection of coins used in early America.
