W-11835, Martin 2.27-C.6 variety, struck at the La Rochelle Mint. Considered to be Rarity-6.
Neither PCGS nor your author has ever seen a better example of this rare overdate, with most survivors either well worn, poorly made, corroded, damaged or some combination of the above.
But this lovely, hard, smooth, well struck golden brown piece is several steps above most of them. Indeed, the only other example we’ve seen in recent years that was remotely comparable was the Craige coin, also graded XF40 by PCGS, which realized $11,162.50 in a 2012 Stack’s auction.
This example is as sharp and well made as that piece, but lacks the black staining and tiny rim clip seen on that one. Also, ours is a lot cheaper.
