Freidus 3.2-D, W-8265 variety, the 1739 J CUT MY WAY THROUGH, Broad Axe reverse type. Considered to be Rarity-7 with 6 examples traced (with 2 of those impounded in museums).
This is a most unusual Higley with better color and harder surfaces than we have encountered before on this issue.
And while there are areas of profound weakness, and some ancient dents, the all-important deer is about as bold and sharp as we’ve seen on any example, including a couple in VF holders – suggesting that most of what appears to be wear here is more likely the result of uneven striking.
In all, a charming piece that is considerably more appealing than the couple of other examples we’ve seen at or near this grade level.
Ex Numismatic Gallery’s August 1947 ANA sale of the Robert Prann Collection, lot #579.
