An interesting silver Jeton commemorating the founding of the Academie Du Gard in Nîmes, France in 1682.
With the ancient arms of the city of Nîmes on the obverse, featuring a Nile crocodile (symbol of Egypt) chained to a tree bisecting COL-NEM (Colony of Nemausus). Interestingly, this same motif appears on ancient Roman coins circa 10 AD celebrating the acquisition of Egypt from Marc Antony and Cleopatra. Who knew?
The piece itself is a lovely and original silvery gray with colorful old toning on the obverse and reverse.
