KM-55 variety, Charles III type. Struck at the Potosi mint.
High grade 1774 Bolivia 8 Reales can almost without exception be traced to a hoard discovered a few decades ago, with all exhibiting proof-like surfaces, a diagnostic repunched A in CAROLUS on the obverse and the look of having been conserved.
But this one is different. It is lustrous rather than P/L, has old blue and golden toning in the devices and does not show the characteristic repunching of the A, all suggesting it is from a different source than the other high grade survivors.
Making this an interesting and unusually eye appealing example of the date, and an excellent representative of the Charles III type in a high end set.
