A handsome example of this significant issue.
Struck in England in approximately 1659 (compare the quality of manufacture to the silver coins of Massachusetts being struck at about that time in Boston) at the bequest of Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore, whose portrait is seen on the obverse.
Notably, Calvert’s portrait is nicely struck with a well defined profile on this piece, and that is not the case on many surviving examples.
An attractive light coin-gray with some darker encrustation in some of the lettering and devices. There are a few stray lines scattered about, the largest of which is on Cecil’s neck, but none are terribly distracting and all are as one might expect to see on a coin of such great age.
A materially better example of this coin (if one can be located at all) becomes a very, very expensive proposition.
