When offered in Bowers and Ruddy’s Kensington collection catalog in the 1970s, this coin was described as ‘One of the most beautiful to appear on the market in recent decades’, and ‘A superb specimen of one of America’s most romantic coin issues’. Noteably, Bowers also called the coin ‘AU’ at a time when a grade even that high was rarely applied to colonial coins.

The color is a distinctive and pleasing light silvery-gray, with some darker areas in and around the devices as one likes to see on a coin of this era.

Weighing a robust 72 grains (according to the PCGS label), this example is a bit heavier than most pieces seen and is precisely in line with the full standard weight intended for this coinage.

In all, a very nice Pine Tree Shilling looking exactly as it did when offered 31 years ago.
