Noe-3, W-710, Salmon 3-C variety, No Pellets at Trunk, N in IN Reversed. Considered to be Rarity-6. 74.1 grains.
A fantastic piece which is to our knowledge the single finest known example of this seldom seen variety.
And while many of the rarest varieties in this series are not especially attractive, with weak, poorly delineated trees and myriad cuds and die breaks, this is anything but. Indeed, this piece might well be the biggest, roundest, boldest most perfectly made Pine Tree Shilling of any variety that this author has ever seen.
It also exhibits superb original surfaces, ideal coin-gray color, delicate old toning in the devices and eye appeal in spades.
The only other high grade Noe-3 we have seen in recent years was a slightly misshapen piece in Stack’s 2005 sale of the Ford Collection, which was sold raw, described as Choice extremely Fine and realized $63,250 back then.
Ex Heritage’s January 2015 sale of the Donald G. Partrick Collection, lot #5570.
$89,500
