And now for something completely different, we are pleased to offer this specialist piece for your collecting consideration.
This is an interesting and scarce example of 1876 Proof Trade $1 Variety 3, one of four distinct varieties extant for this year (described and illustrated below):
Variety 1: Type 1 Obverse / Type 1 Reverse
Rare, estimated to be about 5% of the total proof mintage. The Type 1 obverse exhibits 3 fingers on Ms. Liberty’s outstretched hand, and the end of the Liberty scroll pointing down and to the left. The Type 1 reverse shows a berry within the eagle’s claw:
Variety 2: Type 1 Obverse / Type 2 Reverse
The most common variety, estimated to make up at least 75% of the total proof mintage of this year. The Type 2 reverse is characterized by the absence of the berry within the eagle’s claw:
Variety 3 (the present specimen): Transitional Obverse / Type 2 Reverse
Scarce, estimated to make up at most 10% of the total proof mintage. This obverse exhibits a 4th finger on Liberty’s outstretched hand, with the scroll pointing down and to the left:
Variety 4: Type 2 Obverse / Type 2 Reverse
Scarce, estimated to make up at most 10% of the total proof mintage. The Type 2 obverse shows the 4 fingers on Liberty’s outstretched hand, but with the Liberty scroll now pointing straight down:
The piece itself is a totally original proof with good mirrors and pretty blue, sea green, rose and golden toning on the obverse and reverse.
