JR.2 variety, 14 Stars Reverse. Considered to be Rarity-5.
A pleasing silver-gray example of this very rare issue, with delicate iridescent toning on the obverse and reverse.
There is some weakness / wear near the rims, a couple of edge nicks and a few toned over obverse scratches as seen in our photo, but this coin is still better than many survivors of this rare and popular variety.
Interestingly, the non-sequitur reverse star count is the result of the engravers using the ”star cross” pattern which places the stars in lines instead of arcs. This reverse design had been used last to strike coins in 1798, and it is likely that this reverse die was engraved at or before that time and then re-used in 1804.
